Most likely you have some idea of what it will take to deal with these problem situations, especially if you have read one of the innumerable behavioral approaches to weight control that are already available, or if you have been in a weight-management program such as Weight Watchers. If you haven't found it possible to implement what you have learned (and, unfortunately, our research shows that over 85 percent of persons who have been in behavioral weight-management programs do not continue to use even one of the control strategies that they learned), these four steps to mastery will help you.

Let's assume that you are in one of the situations described in the Weight-Mastery Quiz. To make it difficult, we will choose a situation that does not permit you to avoid being in the presence of tasty foods.

You are preparing a tasty, full-course dinner.

The question is: what can you do to prevent yourself from snacking during food preparation?

Consider some of the possible strategies. If you have allowed yourself to become overly hungry by skipping meals earlier in the day, do you want to nibble on a free vegetable? If you are not really hungry, but just find that your appetite turns on in the presence of good food, will you chew gum or keep a toothpick in your mouth? Wear a surgical mask? I know some people who wear surgical masks every time they cook a tempting dinner!

Could you just brave it out by imagining how each bite will end up on your hips and keep you in a size 16 or 18 instead of a perfect 10?

I am sure you can think of some additional possibilities for preventing eating at this time. It's up to you to decide what substitute behavior or mental attitude might, with practice, become strong enough to defeat the urge to eat high-calorie foods unnecessarily.
